Death of The Diet

Published: 28 March 2008

A Mintel report (March 2008) highlights that diets have lost their popularity with the majority of Britons.

Over the past five years, sales of slimming products have fallen by a third to £79m in 2007, plus the annual rate of growth for reduced fat, calorie or sugar products has remained stagnant.

The Mintel report warns that unless manufacturers alter their approach, the slimming market which is worth £2bn would face a substantial decline.  Only 8% of survey respondents questioned by Mintel , claim they now resort to a specific diet such as Atkins to lose excess weight.  Instead 35% believe more exercise, rather than dieting is the best way to lose weight.  The report also found that half of respondents were most likely to reduce their intake of snacks and fat in an effort to lose weight.
