National Mill Month Guide

Thank you for joining in our celebration of our milling heritage with National Mill Month from www.fabflour.co.uk. Without flour we wouldn’t have our daily bread, our great British staple packed full of goodness.

One of the nation’s feel good foods, bread is a great tasting food which is naturally low in sugar, lower in salt, low fat, calcium enriched and is a source of both protein and fibre so love your loaf!  Easily overlooked, flour contributes about a quarter of dietary energy for the average adult in Britain yet is low in fat and sugar.  Along with the energy comes about 30% of our daily calcium and iron intake, 20% of our protein, more than a quarter of our fibre and between 20% and 50% of a range of other vitamins and minerals such as zinc, magnesium, copper, manganese, thiamin and folate.

Bread is the most well known and significant use for flour and accounts for half the total, but flour makes such a startling contribution to the national diet because of its versatility.  Imagine how much poorer our culinary world would be without cakes, biscuits, sauces, batters, pies and pastries all of which depend on flour as a key ingredient.
